Lumosity - Refreshing Citrus Goodness

Lumosity is a website for training your brain, god knows my brain is in need of training most of the time! However not only is this website sweet for your brain, it’s candy for your eyes as well. The website uses a combination of citrus colours and harmonious neutral gradients to great effect.
Branding
The designers of this site have created a clean, elegant brand. The corporate font chosen for the logo, headers and graphical calls to action lends a sense of modernity whilst retaining a much needed professional look and feel.

I particularly like the way that the oh so web 2.0 “shinny floor” reflection used on the logo subtly changes opacity, nice adaptation of a popular technique. It also takes care of the decender of the y visually appearing below the false horizon.
Colour Scheme
The combination of vivid orange, acidic blue and citrus green really works and the neutral background makes the vibrant colours really zing off the page.

Navigation

Pretty straightforward, rounded corner horizontal navigation. The use of a subtle gradient in a darker burnt orange works well to give the menu needed structure. I like the simplicity as making the divisions more apparent could of harmed the overall appeal.
Structure
The site designers have used some interesting techniques and structural elements throughout the website. I especially like the use of the header area to display scientific facts in a block form with the sub navigation appearing underneath. It draws your attention to the content of the information panel as something that needs to be read to fully understand the page you are on.
Another interesting element is the call to action block used on the Lumosity Program page. The call to action element follows the consitency of the rest of the website whilst being sufficently impactful to draw your eye. Containing a testimonial in this block will no doubt increase conversions. Like all great design not only does it look good it has a purpose.
Coding
Lumosity uses sIFR, a Flash/JavaSript font replacement technique. It works well with this site and allows the designers to use brand fonts without resorting to using images. The only downside is the noticable load time. The sIFR needs time to traverse the DOM and load in the replacement fonts. It isn’t really that noticable so the benefits outway the downsides.
Summary
I really like this website, the colour choices are fresh and vibrant and there are plenty of other features to the design I find inspirational. Please share your thoughts by leaving a comment.

I do agree that the fresh and vibrant colours are appealing, although I wonder if the design accurately reflects the content of the website.
For me this is a cutting edge design which doesn’t quite suit the topic of what seems to be “Brain Training”.
As far as design inspiration goes, this is a great example of simple, modern and effective.
